For the  fashionably conscious woman, wedge heels are an almost essential part of their shoe closet.  Since the first high heels were invented, women have been using them to add an element of height to their ensembles and to accentuate the curve of their legs.  While the stiletto heel is a wonderful look, many women find them difficult to walk in and uncomfortable.  For those who want the aesthetic effect of high heels without the risk of injury, wedge high heels are an excellent alternative.

The wedge heel shoe was the brain child of Italian shoe designer, Ferragamo, in the 1930′s.  This designer was a firm believer in mixing good looks with a good design and actually studied the anatomy of the human form to create a shoe style that was both gorgeous and comfortable to wear.  These popular heels are a shoe which incorporates a wedge shaped sole, which starts low in the front and rises in the back, thus creating a solid sole, rather than the small pointed heel of the stiletto.  This wedge shaped sole is the reason we call these shoes wedge heels.  The solid wedge shaped heel also provides the safety benefits of added traction and stability, making wedge heels the preferred choice in footwear for many women.

Designer wedge heels come in a variety of styles to suit almost any woman’s tastes in footwear.  Wedge heels are available in lace up, slip on, enclosed and open toed designs.  The heels of these shoes are made from a variety of materials, with a leather heel being suitable for a dress shoe and the wood or cork heels being better suited to informal occasions.  For informal occasions, many women prefer espadrilles.  Espadrilles are readily available in most footwear shops and they are essentially a cloth or canvas topped shoe with a woven or cork heel.  From the wedge sandals and espadrilles to wedge heel boots, you can find wedge high heels in styles  to accessorize nearly any outfit.

These shoes also come in a variety of color choices.  The two most popular choices are obviously the black wedge heels and white wedge heels, as these two colors can be used to complete nearly any clothing ensemble, but these shoes can also be found in just about every color combination.

The price range of these shoes can vary widely.  From cheap wedge heels from places like Payless, with prices starting around twenty dollars a pair, to designer shoes by Prada, which regularly see prices of over two hundred dollars, even on sale, the wedge heel can fit into any woman’s budget but a designer shoe addiction could easily leave you in debt.  These shoes can be purchased through local retailers, mail order and online shopping venues but a simple tip for shoe shopping always rings true: By purchasing your shoes during sales or during the off season, you can save hundreds of dollars every year on your new shoe purchases and still have a shoe closet full of highly fashionable footwear.
